Lawn Care Maintenance Tips

Sod Care

The front yard (and possibly rear yard) of your new Estridge Home has been sodded. Sod is a mixture of grass seeds which has been grown at a sod farm for approximately 1 to 1 1/2 years. The sod is cut into 1 yard rolls, transported to your home site and laid in a mannner to allow for proper growth of your yard.

1. All areas of sod should be watered every day for one and a half hours per area, or until the sod is completly soaked. Do not count on mother nature; showers of rain do not typically provide enough moisture to ensure adequate growth.

2. After the first month, the sod should be watered for one hour, at least three times weekly, (more weekly watering should be done during hot and humid periods).

3. The sod should be mowed for the first time in three to four weeks. The first mowing should be left high and the clippings should not be caught. From this time forward, the grass should be cut at normal height (two and a half to three inches) and bagged as normal, unless you have a mulching mower.

4. We also suggest that fertilizer be applied at four weeks. It is important that a good program of fertilization and weed control be maintained to ensure a healthy yard. We recommend that you consult a lawn care professional prior to any fertilization.

Hydroseeding Care

The back yard of your new Estridge Home has been hydroseeded. Hydroseeding is a process of planting seed, mixing the seed with mulch to hold moisture, and a sprayed-on tack coating to prevent erosion and consolidation of mulch and seed. Please find below a list of care instructions which are extremely important to ensure the growth of your yard.

1. All areas should be watered every day for the first three weeks. Watering should be done for at least fifteen to thirty minutes per area. We suggest sprinklers that have a light stream of water, as this will prevent erosion (fan sprinklers). Do not count on mother nature; showers of rain do not typically provide enough moisture to ensure adequate growth. The ground should remain moist until good germination has begun.

2. After the first three weeks, all areas should be watered for forty-five minutes at least three times weekly. More weekly watering should be done during hot and humid periods.

3. The grass seed used is a combination of Rye, Fescue, and Blue Grass. Rye grass germinates very quickly, growth should be noted within the first seven to ten days.

4. The hydroseed area should be mowed at six weeks. We suggest that the clippings not be bagged for the first two mowings.

5. We also suggest that fertilizer be applied at five to six weeks. It is important that a good program of fertilization and weed control be maintained to ensure a healthy yard. We recommend you consult a lawn care professional prior to any fertilization.

6. In cases where there is a steep grade or incline, it is common to use a "netting" to keep the seed from washing off the soil. Do not attempt to remove this "netting" as it is designed to deteriorate over time.

7. A hydroseeded yard will only germinate eighty to eighty-five percent. You will need to overseed the areas that don't come in. Contact a lawn care professional to get the proper instructions on how and when to over seed these areas.

Fertilizing Tips

To achieve a healthy and beautiful yard year round, we recommend the following schedule for fertilizing and seed prevention. The "Holiday Program" is easy to remember and easy to follow.

EASTER - To prevent crabgrass, feed the appropriate nutrients and green the turf for 8 weeks, apply 15-4-10. A word of caution: do not seed with this product

MEMORIAL DAY - For the darkest green and additional nutrients to give a healthy kick for the beginning of summer use 26-5-10 with Iron

4th OF JULY - To continue through the heat of the summer your lawn will need another application of 26-5-10 with Iron

LABOR DAY - Use 28-3-10, 44th Slow Release to feed the lawn for 10 weeks through our Indian summer

HALLOWEEN - Dormant feeding builds carbohydrates in the grass plant over winter and spring green-up. Use 32-0-16 for this final application of the year.

Remember lawn care products should not be applied until 4 weeks after sod or hydroseed. Also, follow directions of the product your purchase for application amounts.
