MAINTENANCE

Interior Care And Maintenance

Putting on a coat of paint to "freshen things up" sells paint for us, but may create problems for you by building up more and more coats of paint on the surface. Unless you want to change colors, or the walls and woodwork are badly marred, try washing! It can give that "just painted" look and save time, trouble and money.

When you are repainting, very dirty surfaces should be washed first. Washing the surfaces properly can mean the difference between one or two coats of paint.

A few basic materials are essential to a good job:

2 Buckets - One for the washing solution, one for clear water.

2 Sponges - One for washing, one for rinsing. Do not use a cloth for washing, as it may shine a flat surface or dull a lustrous one.

Soilax - Use 2 tablespoons to a gallon of warm water.

Household Abrasive Cleaner - For particularly dirty spots.

Newspapers - To protect the floor.

Washing an Entire Wall

First, dust the wall thoroughly. The best method is to use the long-handled duster on your vacuum cleaner.

Wash one area, 4 to 5 square feet at a time always starting at the BOTTOM and washing UPWARD. (If you start washing at the top, dirty water runs down the dirty wall below, creating a streak that is difficult to remove. Washing up from the bottom, dirty water runs down over a clean surface, which is easily wiped off.)

Dip the washing sponge in the Soilax solution and wring it out just enough to keep it from dripping.

Rub with slow, easy, up-and-down strokes, giving the solution time to soften the soil.

Rub stubborn spots with a household abrasive cleanser as described above.

Rinse with water using the rinsing sponge, wringing it so that it will not drip or run.

After rinsing, dip the same sponge in water, wring it dry and wipe the cleaned area. But be careful not to wipe from the clean area into the soiled area. Leave a wet edge.

As you begin to wash a new area, start well within the adjacent clean area to avoid streaking.

Clean the sponges frequently. Change the Soilax solution and rinsing water when they become dirty.

If you plan to paint after washing, let the wall dry thoroughly first.

Removing Spots From Walls

Wash with the Soilax solution, applying very gentle pressure on the sponge.

If the spot remains, dip the sponge in the Soilax solution and wring it out just enough to avoid dripping. Then sprinkle a little household abrasive cleanser on the sponge and rub it into the sponge to make a soapy solution. Then rub the spot gently, increasing pressure slightly if necessary, but only enough to remove the spot.

Rinse the area thoroughly with water and then wipe with a sponge wrung dry.
