IN-SINK-ERATOR® Garbage Dispose Do's and Don'ts

DO grind food waste only with a strong flow of cold water.

DO grind hard material such as bones, fruit parts, etc. A scouring action is created by the particles inside of the grind chamber.

DO grind citrus and other melon rinds.

DO dispose of coffee grounds in your disposer regardless of whether or not you are on metropolitan sewer or septic tank. Coffee grounds will not harm the action of the septic tank.

DO dispose of small amounts of fats and grease in your disposer. Be sure to have the disposer operating and use a strong flow of cold water. If you have a large amount of fat and grease, we suggest you place it in a container, allow it to solidify, then dispose of it in the trash.

DO flush disposer for cleaning. Allow disposer and cold water to run after grinding or after draining sink of dish water. Some detergents are caustic; flushing will cause such material in to the drain line without disposer damage.

DON'T use hot water when grinding food waster. However, hot water can be drained into the disposer between grinding periods.

DON'T turn off motor or water until grinding is completed and only a motor and water sound is heard.

DON'T become alarmed of a brown discoloration appears on the face of the grinding disc. This is normal. It is a surface discoloration only and will not affect the life or performance of the disposer.

DON'T grind extremely fibrous material like corn husks, artichokes, etc. to avoid possible drain blockage.

Objectionable odors coming from your disposer are usually a signal of build-up of bits of grease and food waster left inside the disposer as a result of insufficient water to flush the disposer clean. To help relieve this problem, regular use of Disposer Care Foaming Garbage Disposer Cleaner, Degreaser and Deodorizer is recommended.

Use of a foaming product like Disposer Care, will help relieve build-up of grease, grime and food residue which can cause odors and drainage slow down.

Disposer Care is a patented product which fills the disposer cavity with a thick foam and traps it there for 2 to 3 minutes while using the power of your disposer to clean, degrease and deodorize all interior surfaces.

If you do not have Disposer Care, an alternative method would be as follows. Shut off the disposer. Lift the rubber splash baffle and use a scouring pad to clean the underside of the beffle. Then, use the scouring pad to clean the inner, upper lip of the disposer body.

Place stopper in sink and fill half way with lukewarm water. Add baking soda and mix to form a solution. Turn on the disposer, remove stopper from sink, push the rubber splash baffle down slightly to release entrapped air. This will thoroughly flood the inside of the disposer to wash away particles loosened in the cleaning operation. The baking soda will then freshen the inside of the disposer.
